Explaining the Lyman-alpha forest

چکیده
It is shown that many properties of Lyα forest absorbers can be derived using simple physical arguments. Analytical expressions are derived for the density and the size of an absorber as a function of its neutral hydrogen column density, which agree well with both observations and hydrodynamical simulations. An expression is presented to compute ΩIGM from the observed column density distribution, independent of the overall shape of the absorbers. Application to the observed column density distribution shows that at high redshift most of the baryons are in the forest and suggests a simple interpretation for its shape and evolution.

The Lyman-alpha Forest: a Cosmic Gold Mine
In recent years, a remarkably simple physical picture of the Lyman-alpha forest has emerged, which allows detailed predictions to be made and turns the forest into a powerful probe of cosmology. We point out ways in which such a picture can be tested observationally, and explore three areas in which the Lyman-alpha forest can yield valuable constraints: the reionization history, the primordial ...

I apply the well controlled Hydro-PM approximation of Gnedin & Hui to study the consistency between the column density distribution of the Lyman-alpha forest and the mean opacity of the IGM for 25 different flat cosmological scenarios, including variants of the standard CDM, tilted CDM, CDM with a cosmological constant, and CHDMmodels. I show that observational data of Press, Rybicki, and Schne...
متن کاملLyman-alpha Forest Constraints on the Mass of Warm Dark Matter and the Shape of the Linear Power Spectrum
High resolution N-body simulations of cold dark matter (CDM) models predict that galaxies and clusters have cuspy halos with excessive substructure. Observations reveal smooth halos with central density cores. One possible resolution of this conflict is that the dark matter is warm (WDM); this will suppress the power spectrum on small scales. The Lyman-alpha forest is a powerful probe of the li...
متن کاملLine versus Flux Statistics – Considerations for the Low Redshift Lyman-alpha Forest
The flux/transmission power spectrum has become a popular statistical tool in studies of the high redshift (z > 2) Lyman-alpha forest. At low redshifts, where the forest has thinned out into a series of well-isolated absorption lines, the motivation for flux statistics is less obvious. Here, we study the relative merits of flux versus line correlations, and derive a simple condition under which...
متن کاملMatter Power Spectrum from the Lyman-Alpha Forest: Myth or Reality?
We investigate possible systematic errors in the recent measurement of the matter power spectrum from the Lyman-alpha forest by Croft et al. (2001). We find that for a large set of prior cosmological models the Croft et al. result holds quite well, with systematic errors being comparable to random ones, when a dependence of the recovered matter power spectrum on the cosmological parameters at z...
